In-depth #3!

February19

Hey guys!

This week at my vocal lessons, we started practicing some more scales as well as recording my own voice so that I could play it back.

The scales we did were like thirds, so like C, E, G and higher. Oh, and my mentor, Dorina, said that I was getting way better and that I have lots of potential! :D We also did some CDEFG scales in the “oo” sound, and the thirds scale was like “soh, soh, soh”. It’s really hard to explain, but I think you get the gist of it.

OH! And my mentor said I could hit a high G! I don’t even know what a high G is but I think that’s a good thing.

Oh and she tells me a lot of stories about how it’s so important to sing from your diaphragm, instead of your throat. Your throat can get really damaged, and when it starts bleeding, your voice is basically over. You can develop vocal nodes and stuff, which is so terrible. Apparently, you can even sue your teacher for not teaching you how to sing properly!

One more thing I learned today: breathing is the MOST important part to singing! You honestly cannot even start singing without learning how to breathe properly. There’s this one breathing exercise where you take a big breath and expel the air in short, 1 second intervals. Then, you see how many seconds you last before you need to draw out more air. I’m up to 33-34, and she says that’s really good. My goal is to get it out to 40! If you guys want to learn how, just come ask me at school or somethin’. :)

Here’s a part of my lesson. We were going over a song, and she was basically teaching me the tune and playing piano.

I love the audio recording as a window on your lesson, Veronica! It’s a great way for you to document, and reflect on your development, and for us to be able to so clearly to share in it with you.

With your recently discovered keen- abilities in sound editing, the length of your in-depth recordings should provide a lot of material to bring together in some very cool reflections and lessons as podcasts, perhaps: Ira Glass (played by Veronica) goes to Singing School?

    Thanks for sharing!

    Mr. J
